File storage integration

Connect file storage so your documents are available in Metal and become searchable. Supported providers are SharePoint, Egnyte, Box, ShareFile, and Google Drive.

Browse connected files

Once connected, browse the provider under Files in the sidebar. Documents you bring in are processed so their contents turn up in search.

Choose what to sync

Admins choose which folders and files to bring in. Open the provider under Files, then sync a specific folder or an individual file. Syncing a folder imports that folder’s contents. There is no picker to exclude specific subfolders or files from a folder you are syncing. To keep the synced set small, sync the nested folders you need rather than a high-level parent. For SharePoint, Box, ShareFile, and Google Drive, you can later unsync a folder. That removes it from Metal and stops automated re-import of that folder. For Egnyte, minimize the set by choosing which folders and files to sync in the first place.

Egnyte access and deletions

Egnyte is the connected file-storage provider that syncs folder and file permissions into Metal. When a user’s or group’s access to a synced Egnyte folder is granted or revoked, Metal updates who can see that folder and its files as those Egnyte events arrive. This is continuous event processing, not something that waits for the next scheduled check. The person must already exist as a Metal user mapped to their Egnyte account for the change to apply. Search and chat can lag a short time after the permission change while Metal finishes updating. If a file or folder is deleted in Egnyte, Metal removes the corresponding synced copy when it receives that delete. Restoring a file from Egnyte trash can bring it back into Metal if the parent folder is still synced. A daily check also looks for files in already-synced Egnyte folders that should have been imported but were missed. Permission and delete handling still come from Egnyte events, not from that daily check.
