Companies are the most central record in Metal. This page covers creating them, reading their profiles, and resolving possible duplicates.

Create a company

1

Open Companies

In the sidebar, expand Records and select Companies. Click New Company in the top right.
2

Name the company

In the Add a Company dialog, enter the Company Name (start typing to match an existing company) and optionally add Company Tags. Click Next.
3

Create a folder (optional)

You can create a folder for the company’s files now, or choose Skip Folder.
4

Upload files (optional)

After the company is created, upload files right away or Dismiss to do it later. See Files & documents.

Read a company profile

Open a company to see its profile: firmographics, Key Contacts, related deals, and files. Fields filled in by AI show a View Enrichment option — see Enrichment. Key Contacts lists the people linked to that company. See Working with people.

Designate portfolio companies

On the company’s Settings tab, use Investment designation for portfolio tracking; Add on is set by linking a Platform company, not as a status you pick on its own. See Work with portfolio companies.

Review duplicate companies (admin)

When a company is added, Metal checks it for possible duplicates. High-confidence duplicate matches merge automatically; anything less certain is flagged and held for a decision. Only admins can see and work the duplicate review queue. When flagged companies are waiting, admins see a banner at the top of the Companies list saying how many need review. Click Review all to open the queue, or add ?review=duplicates to the Companies URL. Each row shows the flagged company, up to two suggested matches with their search scores, and Metal’s evidence and confidence for the match.
1

Open a review

Click Review on a row to open the Resolve possible duplicate dialog.
2

Decide

  • If the flagged company is a separate business, click Keep as unique to remove it from the queue.
  • If it’s a duplicate, select the matching company under Merge with, click Merge with selected, and then Confirm merge.
Metal picks which record survives based on external identity and record age. The merge runs in the background and can’t be undone. When the queue is empty, it shows All caught up. If someone else resolves a review while you have it open, Metal shows a message and refreshes the queue.
