A member’s role determines what they can see and do. Roles are shown on the Members page for reference.

Restricted actions

Some actions change who can access data, so Metal limits them to specific roles. Team membership controls access to resources shared with that team. A team’s external ID links the team to an integration sync that adds users to it. That’s why both are restricted. Making a chat private or public, or changing its project, changes who can read it. Other people who can open a chat can’t make either change.
There is no separate viewer or editor member role — those are workflow share levels, not organization roles. Some internal capabilities are reserved for the Metal team.The Owner organization role has been retired. Members who previously had Owner are now treated as Admin and keep the same access.

Changing a role

Roles aren’t self-serve in the app today. To change someone’s role, use Request to add users on Settings → Members to describe the change, or contact support@metal.ai. See Adding & managing users.
Follow least privilege: give people Member by default and reserve Admin for those who manage firm-wide configuration.
