# Work with portfolio companies

> Designate portfolio companies and add-ons, filter the company list, and use dashboards, lists, and workflows to follow companies after close.

Metal does not have a separate Portfolio Monitoring app. After a deal closes, you keep working in the same company, deal, list, dashboard, and workflow surfaces — with a canonical **investment designation** so portfolio companies are not inferred from old deal records.

<Info>
  If you don't see **Portfolio** under **Records**, or a dashboard your firm
  expected, ask your Metal admin or [support@metal.ai](mailto:support@metal.ai).
  Some holdings and reporting views are enabled per organization.
</Info>

## Set investment designation

Open a company, go to its **Settings** tab, and find **Investment designation**. **Target**, **Portfolio Company**, and **Exited** are the statuses your firm asserts — they are not inferred from closed deals, so you can designate long-held companies that have no deal record.

| Status                | What it means                                                                                                                                                                                            |
| --------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Target** | A company you are tracking that is not currently in the portfolio. |
| **Portfolio Company** | A current platform investment.                                                                                                                                                                           |
| **Exited**            | A past investment.                                                                                                                                                                                       |
| **Add on** | A bolt-on of a platform company. You set this by linking a **Platform company** — or Metal creates the link automatically when an add-on deal closes. It is not a value you pick in the status dropdown. |

<Steps>
  <Step title="Set Target, Portfolio Company, or Exited">
    Choose the status and click **Save**. Choose **No designation** to clear it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Mark an add-on">
    Under **Platform company**, pick the portfolio company and click **Link as add-on**. Unlink first if you need to change the status afterward.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If investment status is synced from your CRM, the field can be locked in Metal — see [CRM integration](/help/integrations/crm).

The designation drives the **Portfolio Company**, **Add on**, and **Exited** badges on company pages and the **Investment Status** column on [Companies](/help/companies). Add-ons also show their platform parent next to the status.

## Find portfolio companies

On **Records → Companies**:

* Use the **Portfolio** quick filter to show designated platform portfolio companies.
* Add an **Investment Status** filter or column to include **Add on** and **Exited** companies.

You can put the same companies on a [list](/help/lists) and add financial, enrichment, or computed columns for a recurring review set.

On the [Active Pipeline](/help/deals#track-deals-on-the-active-pipeline), group the board by **Portfolio Company** to see add-on deals clustered under their platform parent.

## Relate add-on deals to a platform

On a deal, set **Acquisition Type** to **Add on** and pick the **platform parent company**. The picker is limited to designated portfolio companies. See [Set the acquisition type](/help/deals#set-the-acquisition-type).

## Review fund holdings

When **Records → Portfolio** is in your sidebar, it lists **Active** and **Exited** holdings: company, fund, entry (and exit) date, ownership percentage, source, and add-on count. Filter by fund, and add a holding for a designated portfolio company that is not yet assigned to a vehicle.

Holdings are separate from investment status. A company can be a portfolio company without a fund row, and one company can be held by more than one fund.

## Follow performance and activity

Use these shared surfaces — none of them is a standalone monitoring product:

* **[Dashboards](/help/dashboards)** — build an org-wide view (for example, *Q3 Portfolio Review*) with Data or Research widgets. Dashboards are rolling out gradually.
* **Company default dashboards** — admins set the widgets every company page opens with under **Settings → Firm Guidance → Default Dashboards**.
* **[Financial metrics](/concepts/financial-metrics)** — Metal extracts figures from board decks, financials, and other files. Admins can add [custom financial metrics](/concepts/financial-metrics#custom-financial-metrics).
* **[Chat](/help/search#search-vs-chat)** — ask about a company or a filtered set of portfolio companies. Answers use the same designations and documents as the rest of the app.

## Portfolio workflows

Workflow catalogs and schedules are configured per organization. There is no global Portfolio Monitoring workflow that every firm already has.

On the **Workflows** page you may see:

| What you see | What it is |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Portfolio update digest** | A guided starter. It drafts a weekly summary of recent portfolio activity, material changes, and follow-ups for review. It does not send the digest automatically. |
| **Board meeting prep** | A guided starter. It assembles recent correspondence, company context, and open topics ahead of a board meeting. It needs a Microsoft Exchange connection and stays read-only. |
| **Portfolio Monitoring** | A request tile. Clicking it asks Metal to configure a workflow for your firm — it is not a built-in you can run immediately. |

Your organization may also have custom workflows for KPI packs, reporting-file intake, or board materials. Those appear in **Workflows** only after they are configured and shared with you. See [Run and review Metal AI workflows](/help/workflows). If you do not see a workflow you expected, ask your Metal admin or [support@metal.ai](mailto:support@metal.ai).
